Weekend Plans
We're going away this weekend to stay with my family. We have three birthdays to celebrate (including mine on Sunday!) and a whole weekend to spend together doing it.

Birthday Round Up
We're relaxing today after a great weekend of celebrations and fun. We started on Friday with dinner with T's parents. I had made birthday cake, and cooked duck legs for dinner which were lovely. It was a new recipe but it's one we're already looking forward to having again, and it has gone in my book.

We saw friends on Saturday and went out for dinner for a joint birthday celebration - a lovely meal at a chinese restaurant. Then cake and a walk home in the rain which was more fun than it sounds. Sunday meant church, lunch with just the two of us and then more games and fun with our friends (and some holiday planning thrown in for good measure).
Today we are enjoying our extra day of weekend. The sun is working hard to break through the clouds. Here goes May...

Birthdays and Busy
This is a week of fun and planning and celebration for us. Friday is T's birthday and we are looking forward to a long weekend (thank you bank holidays!) of family, friends and fun. The party starts when he gets home on Friday.
Before then I have a few secrets to organise, surprises to arrange and a fair bit of shopping. My week got off to a fantastic start with tea and elevenses shared with my Grandad who dropped by on his way home. (Hello, Grandad!)
Our (non birthday) evenings are filled with church business this week, meetings and study groups, prayer sessions and planning. I'm working on the basis that quick and light is best for dinner, especially with the weather warming up. In come the salads, tarts, smoothies and milkshakes that make summer so tasty. This was Monday's dinner, adapted from this recipe with a few mushrooms and a bit of bacon:

Birthday Sparkles
I was so excited last week when one of my school friends came to stay. And it was so lovely to spend two days talking and laughing and catching up.
I remember giggling through lessons, trying our hands at volunteering. Playing cards in study sessions. Snowball fights. A group of us travelled to Paris after school finished. We met up throughout university, took in the sights of London and threw sweets around. She was a bridesmaid at our wedding. And today is her birthday!

Happy Birthday Dad!
It's my Dad's 50th birthday today, and although we're not with him, we'll be celebrating at the weekend. (Oh, and although he's 50 - he was still being mistaken for my "older brother" at our wedding a year and a half ago. Not bad, Dad!)
I just wanted to tell you how great he is. When I was five he read me The Hobbit as a bedtime story for months and months. And he did all the voices. My sense of humour comes straight from him. He makes fantastic cups of tea, and he has inspired me to invest time and energy in plants and gardening. He grew these:

Between them, he and Mum have given me a wonderful example of being best friends in a marriage. They taught me about God, and always made me feel good about my achievements. He taught me to ride a bike, to swim, and took me hiking (or riding his motorbike) up hills to watch the sunrise.

Away in Conwy
{This weekend we're going to a wedding. But I've been totally slack this week and not shared my photos from last weekend of pretty Welsh countryside. So here you go...}
Last Friday T's mum picked us up at lunchtime and we began the journey up to Conwy in North Wales. We were celebrating his grandma's 80th birthday, and the whole family were gathering for the weekend. By the time we got there it was dark and raining.
We had a meal together, and then went to bed. In the morning we woke to beautiful views of the countryside - hills, sheep, valleys. Gorgeous.
Breakfast in the conservatory, and then we headed off to look round Conwy. We visited the castle...
The view from the castle walls over the bay was beautiful...
So we went down into the town for a closer look...

We don't really know what the tree was about - I'm guessing it had been a harvest celebration. It was decorated with fruit and pasta. It was very strange but I kind of liked its quirkyness. We split up for shopping and T and I walked back to the inn. It was only a few miles and the views were beautiful.
We spent the evening in dinner and merriment until too tired to continue the party.
And on Sunday we came home for an evening of snuggling up on the sofa.

Birthday Weekend!
We spent this weekend with my family. We mostly played games and talked and ate yummy food so I don't have too many pictures to share. But there was birthday cake...
...and cupcakes!
Shiv came over and we played more games. I got lots of lovely presents - two beautiful bags...
...some crafty excitingness...
...some books, a CD, some jewellery and a DVD. It was all very lovely and relaxing - it felt like a mini holiday. Spending my birthday weekend with my parents, sisters and husband (and a little bit with Shiv) was the best part. It was perfect.
Today we are back home and at work. It is hot. Sizzlingly boilingly hot. As in small children sat wilting under trees this afternoon. I realise it isn't hot compared to Asia or Africa but still - we live in England! We are not used to this kind of heat. Think of the small children who were not coping well with it.
T is making fruit smoothies now, the perfect end to a hot day!

Happy Birthday Roy!
My lovely middling sister is seventeen today! I have given her so many nicknames in the last seventeen years - Bronnie, Bronica, Ronnie... But the one she is using on her own blog was started by T - she has a hamma bead sign on her bedroom door with her name in alternate blue and white letters. Because the background to the sign is dark you can only see the white ones - so you get -R-O-Y

Thoughts on Birthdays
In nine days it will be my birthday. My first married birthday.
Yesterday my husband came home with surprises and secrets. Some were shared, some are still secret. This was exciting.
It's also new. I tell him pretty much everything that happens. When it was coming up to his birthday it was so hard not to tell him all about the surprises I had planned. I never have trouble keeping surprises from anyone else but being used to sharing everything it takes some concentration not to just talk.
I've also never had a married birthday before. On my birthday I will wake up with my husband. That's never happened before.
This time last year I wasn't that bothered about my birthday. And I was turning 21. I was more excited about our wedding (just over a month later) and my hen night (which would be when I'd see all my girl-friends). Oh and graduation. It was a summer of momentous occasions really and turning 21 kind of paled next to the marriage/graduation combo.
But then my lovely husband and lovely housemate kept a secret plan from me. They planned a dinner party. The fact that they'd arranged the whole thing without me knowing or expecting anything threw me a little but was so special. That summer I thought I knew exactly when the important events were happening. I figured I was getting enough fuss that year...and the fact that they planned a little extra fuss made me feel very loved.
This summer will be calmer and quieter but no less special. It will be a summer filled with new experiences and memories to come. I'm pretty excited that there are still surprises though...

Looking Forward
Since my last post it feels like there are a lot of opportunities. In the next few weeks I'm going to be pushing on [kicking on?] a lot of doors. You never know which one will open next.
I love June. It is the first really summery month and in our family it's always been a birthday filled month - my youngest sister will be fifteen on Sunday, and my middling sister will be seventeen on the 23rd. And then I will be twenty-two on the 27th! This means shopping for presents, cake and a very fun weekend with my family coming up.
And in June we'll be seeing T's side of the family and visiting some friends. Our strawberry plant is flowering which means I'm hoping for some (maybe three) homegrown strawberries. It's going to be a good month.
